The Ruby!

Last month on April 12th, The Ruby hosted it’s first event! The Ruby is made up of myself, Chelsea Fullerton and Candice DePrang and was created out of a desire to better connect the creative ladies in the Austin community. At this first event, held at Take Heart on E. 11th street, Nina Gordon, the shop owner, spoke to the group about her creative journey from social worker to shop owner. It was such a relevant discussion for many women in the room, many of whom were contemplating a career switch into the creative realm or who had recently made one (like yours truly). Nina was gracious, articulate and so personable—she was the perfect first speaker and hostess for The Ruby.

From interior designers to illustrators, florists to stylists, every guest brought her own unique view point and talents to the gathering. Chelsea, Candice and I are in agreement that Austin is an incredible city for style and design and  just beginning to be thought of as such. We’re known for music, for keeping it weird, for tie dye and cowboy boots and queso. But we all believe that it’s time for Austin to be known for it’s incredible designers and stylists as well, and it’s from this belief in the local talent of Austin that The Ruby was born. And oh! Do we have lots of more in store…

We’re currently planning two summer events, one of which is at one of your favorite national stores (trust me on this), although I’m not announcing it on the blog until a little later. Stay tuned…we’ll soon have a site up where you can purchase tickets and read info on upcoming events.

Local Love: Hillside Farmacy

A couple of weeks ago, my friend Clare and I went out to lunch to celebrate her birthday at a fun new restaurant called Hillside Farmacy. It’s so cute and we had a lot of fun sitting outside in a sunny spot with kids and dogs playing next to us.

Local Love: JM Dry Goods

It’s been too long since I’ve shared some Local Love here on the Shoes. I thought I’d get back into the swing of things with a fun Marfa transplant, JM Dry Goods. Have you been?

Local Love: Mod Photoshoot

Positively giddy over this photo shoot created by a super talented group of Austin gals. The late 60′s vibe, the daisy flower garlands, the table settings…perfection. The credits of the shoot kind of read like a Who’s Who of Austin’s most talented ladies in wedding and party planning. I’ve had the joy of meeting most of these ladies and they each have such vision and drive. So, so inspiring.

Ready to meet your new favorite local vendors?

Local Love: Lenoir

With Lenoir opening on the heels of Elizabeth Street, Bouldin Creek is quickly establishing itself as the next go-to spot for hip new Austin restaurants. I’m so eager to try this one out! Tuesday through Saturday, Lenoir offers a $30 prix-fixe menu where diners choose three items from the four categories: Field, Sea, Land and Dream. How sweet is that? With it’s cozy interior and thoughtful food, this feels like the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion.  Read a fun interview with co-owner, Jessica Maher, here.

Local Love: Lucy’s Fried Chicken

This past weekend, Adam and I ventured out to Lucy’s Fried Chicken to see what all the buzz was about. I have to say, for being the less food-obsessed in the relationship, Adam does a beautiful job of finding out about all the hot spots before I do. Lucy’s is no exception! When we pulled in it was pouring rain and we were a little spooked seeing that a lot of the seating was outside, but I scampered inside anyway to put our name on the list.

Local Love: Currie Person + Spartan

The first time I stepped into Spartan on South Lamar I  thought, “This is it.” It was so minimalist, so cool, so totally Austin. As we as a city create our own style and design aesthetic, it’s easy to lose it in the “Keep Austin Weird” genre, the tie-dye with which we’re associated and the cowboy boots and jeans look that pops up on every travel show ever filmed here. But the hidden gem in Austin’s style is so much more nuanced than that. It’s simple and pretty, it’s effortless but special. And that’s what Spartan does right. As a host of new and amazing shops pop up and Austin becomes more interested in good style and design, Spartan has served as such an incredible example of where we can go and what that can look like. It’s the perfect place to buy really special items at any price point, be that a gift for a loved one or something for your own space.

And now! Let’s get to the good stuff. Below is a short interview with the gracious and talented owner and curator, Currie Person. Read on to hear all about Currie’s latest projects, inspiration and excellent small business advice.
